Within the past 25 years, Fernwood NZ has developed a system that ensures all harvesting of tree fern in New Zealand is managed sustainably. There are no bulldozers involved, and no damage is done to the forest floor. NZ tree fern fire is environmentally responsible and entirely renewable. The environment is left as it was found - intact and undisturbed.

The regulations around tree fern harvesting and manufacturing are tight. The Government of Aotearoa, New Zealand, is serious about protecting its natural resources. Most of New Zealand's native forests are found in National Parks, and those are fully protected.

Fernwood NZ’s raw materials are sourced from a renewable resource on privately owned forest land only.

Unique Qualities

Tree fern sourced from New Zealand is soft, porous, spongy and long lasting and it has fantastic moisture holding abilities. These natural products – tree fern panels, fibre and totems for plants, have a much larger surface area than many other substrates, which means it retains moisture so much better. Because of tree fern’s unique properties, there is no need to choose between a course, medium, or fine grade product. In a pot, it acts as if it was on a tree trunk in the wild and fulfills the plant’s every need.
